If you interested in research and would like information on the use of laboratory animals in a research setting, please join us. Research Warriors along with the Division of Laboratory Animal Resources' (DLAR) newest program, Students Training in Animal Research Techniques (START) will be hosting a series of introductory sessions to provide the direction you will need to obtain exposure to working with the most commonly used animals in research.

The DLAR START Program will present a series of 3 sessions for individuals with an interest in research involving the use of animals.

Session 1 - Introduction to Research and Animal Use
​
In this session we discuss the regulations, policies and responsibilities when working with lab animals. You will be introduced (via video) to the most frequently used animals in research, mice and rats. This session covers common handling and restraint methods, as well as, other techniques that may be listed on a protocol. You will then understand the training process and what measures are needed to sign up for session 2 and 3. ​

Session 2 - Regulatory On-Line Training
You must complete session 1 before proceeding to session 2. This is an online training required of all individuals working with animals here at WSU. It includes allergen exposure info.​

Session 3 - Basic Rodent Handling and Use
You must complete session 1 and 2 in order to be eligible. This session will prepare you for working with rats and mice and being added to a protocol. This session covers behavior, signs of pain and discomfort, housing and injection techniques. You will be exposed to live animals during this session. Certification will be granted upon completing the START series successfully and approval from the training specialist.
